I found this site after a web search I started after viewing my grandfather's medal citations last month. I type his name and 76th in google to get to this site. For years I wondered what his experience was (he passed in 1988) and now I know more than I ever could have imagined. I just started reading the history but I know it will be a fascinating and something that the rest of his descendants will be interested in. Thank You!

Thank you so much for developing this page.  My Grandfather was in the 76th.  He never spoke much about the War, yet you could always tell it was in the back of his mind.  He was a Tech. Sergeant during the War.  He did share with me a few memories of the fine men he walked along side of during those times.  That War took a huge toll on the man I called "Pop".  He passed away in 2004 leaving behind a family and friends that truly loved him.  Pop was very proud of his family and always took the time to let us all know how much he loved us.  For those members of the 76th who served alongside my Pop...I thank you for all that you did and all that you sacrificed.  I thank you also for the brave deeds which you accomplished which allowed for Pop to come back home.  If you are wondering what Pop's name is...its very simple...for I carry it with me everyday...I am proud to say...that I was named after a great man.

I recently acquired a captured Nazi flag and on it has names of men that were in the 76th.  I would like to know if anyone can tell me the story of this flag and where they captured it.  I have contacted on of the sons of a gentleman from Niles MI who signed the flag, but his Dad passed in 1980.  Can anyone help me find some of these men that may still be with us?

Excellent site that I enjoyed learning about. I am a former Marine, my father was a WWII Marine wounded at Tarawa part of the 2nd Raider Battalion. My son is due to go to Afghanistan, 19years old, next summer. I was doing research to let him know more about his GREAT-grandfather who was also Army as he is in the NH National Guard. My grandfather served with the 302nd Ambulance Co., Field Hospital 302, 301st Sanitary Train, 76th Division attached to 4th Army Corps in WWI. Hence trying to find info through Google I came to your 76th Division site and am impressed (right Division- wrong war!!). I'm proud of my son (though afraid of course) and he is proud of his heritage. My grandfather died in 1971 when I was 5 so I never had the chance to learn much of his service, just have faded old pictures and a german "Gott Mit Uns" buckle/ belt. Thanks for maintaining this site. I too dread the day when the last of this Greatest Generation answer the final roll call.

I would like to get in touch with Gerald T Brown.  I am trying to do research on my second cousin Jack G Keller, who was in the 304th, 2 Platoon.  He was killed on l March 1945.  It was wonderful to be able to read all the information Mr Brown had written about his uncle Hollis A Cloyd.  I was very interested in the response from Earl F Huntoon, who stated he was near my cousin when he died.  I would love to get a copy of the pictures he sent Mr Brown of Company G.  Thank you for your time.

My Uncle,  PVT.ANTHONY SANDANO 20261667, a member of the 76th Inf. Div....possibly 417 Infantry Regiment, was KILLED IN ACTION on March 30th.

The research I did concluded that he died either in the towns of Schmitten or Dorfweil on March 30th.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

My dad's discharge papers said he served with the 301 med. bn. co A. The only thing I remember him saying [about the war] is he drove a jeep one time for Ernie Pyle. My wife brought home a donated book from the library that Ernie wrote, called "Brave Men". In one of the final chapters called "hedge row fighting". Ernie mentioned an incident about coming upon a downed RAF pilot, this incident was shown in the picture "the longest day". The pilot was portrayed by actor Richard Burton.
Well, my dad told me about that incident before he died, [long before I got the book] that's when he drove the jeep for Ernie, but Ernie didn't mention dad's name.
Dad's name was Walter R. Hendrickson. If anyone remember's the 301 med. bn., would they please e mail me.  Thanks
