My uncle was Capt. Donald Katz, the CO of the first platoon, Company I, 304th.  I knew very little about his service in the war until today.  He never spoke about it and I never knew where to look. I know he was a leader of men, and a tough cookie. Don brought my father to the US after the war, as my Dad survived the Holocaust.  Don passed away on March 27, 2011 at 94 years of age.  Thank you to Jim Keefe for your research that my sister discovered.

Hello Gerald,
nice to hear from you. You had invited me back in 2007 to hang with you during the 76th last reunion in D.C. I am the one who studied the Battle fields in Auw, Germany when the 76th fought during March 3rd- 10th after crossing the Kyll river.
I received info on the 76th patch being re activated. Good to hear.
I just sent an email to someone who wanted info on his Uncle who was KIA March 30, 1945. I sent info to them from my Battle action book that Col. Hamilton sent me back in 2007. I kinda narrowed down the Uncles where abouts on March 29-30th. Your site is great!
Well take care
Dave Livesay

Robert C. Hunter, PFC, Co.L, 417th Infantry Reg., 76th Division, Is my father.  He passed 7 Nov. 1995.  He spoke very little of his Military service, I understand why.  My dates of service Oct. 1968 to Aug. 1989.
We are letting others know of his passing.  When Mother passed last July.  I found Dad's discharge papers.  That is the reason for the time laps.
Thank You
Jim Hunter

Read the unit history cover to cover. Amazing. When i got to the MIA section i was surprised to see my grandfathers name, Pvt. Paul R. Jackson of Bravo company 417IR. He had told me that he had been captured for a brief period, but i was not familiar of any details. If possible i would really like to know when and where he had been captured. Thank you for this great piece of written history.

This is for my Uncle, he is registered in the 417th Infantry registry, his name is Jack F Kountz, he passed away Dec 19th 2012 , he was an honorable man, like most from that era,  he grew up in the Great Depression, and was part of "The Greatest Generation" Graduated High School in 1942 and went right into world war 2 Assigned to the 76th Division 417th Infantry Regiment HQ Company. The people of this era knew how to overcome the many difficult trials they faced, everyone pulled together for the Common Good, May God Bless "The Greatest Generation"

In memory of my grandfather: Louis Alcarese (nickname: Spahgetti). He served with the 76th Infantry Division as a cannoneer in the 364th Feild Artillery on a 155 howitzer during WWII. God bless you all.
